WAVE 3- Stories Without Local Relevance- 10/25/15

WAVE 3 news posted an article about the Oklahoma State University homecoming parade crash. This story was about a woman who was driving under the influence and crashed into a stand full of people watching the parade. So far, 44 people are injured, 4 are dead, and 8 are critically injured. The story is a huge story because of the fact that this story could have happened anywhere, at any homecoming. The story put on the website because the story is so horrible and viewers find interest in stories that have fatalities and make the viewer scared. This story has no local relevance; the story took place in Oklahoma, at their university. While the story could have happened anywhere with anyone; it happened in Oklahoma, when Adacia Chambers was driving under the influence. This story has significance to everyone because it happened because Ms. Chambers was driving under the influence, and as important as that is, the story does not have a local relevance. The crash happened about 726 miles away, which is not local at all. Local relevance is when something “directly concerns the viewing/readership area surrounding local news organization” (according to gradethenews.com). WAVE 3- Local Relevance- 10/24/15

WAVE 3 has an article about the Churchill Down bid to host the 2018 Breeder’s Cup. This story, although it is important to horse breeders and people racing in the Breeder’s Cup, it does not fit under the category of being newsworthy, this is because the story is about the bidding on where to host the Breeder’s Cup. The decision has not been made yet, so the story is just telling the audience that the Breeder’s Cup might be at Churchill Downs. Although the story does not possess the quality of newsworthiness, it does have local relevance. It has local relevance because Churchill Downs is a very well-known place in the Louisville community and if we were to place a bid on the Breeder’s Cup and get the opportunity to host the Cup, it would be great for the Louisville Community and for the Louisville economy. WAVE 3- Explination Flaws

On WAVE 3's website, there is an article about a shooting that occurred on Lakeview Drive, where a forty year old man was shot and killed. The story is only 80 words, and basically the article states that the family is sad for their loss, the man’s name was Kevin Deramus and he was found outside an apartment this morning. This news story is flawed because there is no explanation. For a story to be explained properly, the story needs to include big picture reporting and the news organization needs to open their eyes to a broader topic, not just that someone died this morning in a shooting. Also, this story has no newsworthiness at all, the story does not affect a broad audience and it does not have a lasting effect on the people in this community. WAVE 3- Non-Newsworthy Story #2-10/24/15

When I went on WAVE3's website, out of the website's top three stories, one caught my eye, it was the story about a shooting close to Churchill Downs, and this story was about two men that died in a shooting. Newsworthiness is whether or not a story will have a direct impact on a wide audience, which, out of the top four stories, none of the stories is newsworthy. This story was put on the home page, not because the story was newsworthy, it was put there because citizens love to read about crimes and because it took place so close to a well-known Louisville place, the story has more interest to the public. However, this story is not newsworthy because the story does not affect many people, and it doesn’t have a lasting effect. This story was published because people tend to enjoy stories about crime and the story was made to be a story that made the interesting important, because the people that listen to WAVE3 love to hear about crime. WAVE 3 News- Non-Newswrothy 10/24015

My news station for these six weeks was WAVE 3, while a majority of their stories were crime, traffic, and weather, I went on the website and the second story listed on the website was a story about how a famous actress had died at the age of 95. This story is fluff. There is nothing life changing in this story, and while Maureen O’Hara is a Hollywood legend, this story is not newsworthy at all. The entire story consists of a summary of Ms. O’Hara’s life. While, I do agree that Ms. O’Hara is a Hollywood legend and she should be celebrated, I do not believe that by putting her second on the list on the homepage of the news was a good decision. Under the story about Maureen’s natural death, there was a story about a person dying in a shooting locally. While her death is important because she was a Hollywood legend, I do not think that she should’ve been prioritized above a shooting locally, while neither of these storiesa have the characteristic of being newsworthy, the shooting might be able to become newsworthy if the shooter hadn't been caught or had shot many people.
